Associated British Ports (ABP)

The Situation

ABP operates a Health and Safety programme across all of its sites called ‘Five Point PPE’. This involves the mandatory provision of five core items of personal protective equipment to the workforce in operational areas.

With regards to hand protection, ABP wanted to simplify the selection of gloves available to staff.  Too much choice and differing safety standards can be confusing and a core range suited to specific tasks would be more efficient.

As a company that is committed to improving their safety record around cargo handling, ABP wanted to ensure their entire staff returns home safely every day, and providing the correct PPE is paramount to achieving this success.

“Globus has engaged with our workers, attending roadshows to introduce the gloves into the workforce, as well as being on standby to provide support.”

Michelle Tilley - Quality and Compliance Director, ABP

ABP’s Quality and Compliance Director, Michelle Tilley commented: ”We are extremely serious about safety at ABP and so we wanted a supplier who could educate our workers on the importance of wearing gloves.”

The Solution

Globus was commissioned to initially evaluate hand protection requirements and following the implementation of its Hand Protection Programme, a core range of gloves was proposed. These met the specific requirements of ABP’s diverse cargo handling business without compromising safety.

Globus hand protection experts worked alongside the ABP Quality and Compliance team in instigating glove trials amongst the workforce. The ABP workforce quickly became engaged in the evaluation process and subsequently, a Globus glove solution was adopted. The range consists of six gloves, each suited to different environments and handling tasks, from both the SHOWA and SKYTEC product ranges.

Michelle Tilley continues: “Globus has engaged with our workers, attending roadshows to introduce the gloves into the workforce, as well as being on standby to provide support.”

The Outcome

By investing in a hand protection solution from Globus, ABP has improved safety standards within the company.  Workers are well protected and the company can be assured that they have provided the best opportunity and selection of hand protection to their workers.

Michelle commented: “The selection we have chosen is of a high quality that will offer us improved safety, with the added benefit of being more cost effective.”
