Globus Helps Byrne Group Build Olympic Success as well as The Shard
Byrne Group plc is a large building development firm whose many high-profile projects include Europe’s tallest building – The Shard at London Bridge – and the O2 Arena. The company also worked on the construction of the 2012 London Olympic Park in Stratford, including the concrete works for the Olympic stadium.
Byrne Group’s workers had been throwing away several pairs of protective gloves every day because they were ill-fitting, caused sweaty hands and became odorous. Apart from the huge waste of resources, unpleasantness for the workers and reduction in productivity, this was contrary to the company’s policy of encouraging workers to wear their PPE to safeguard their health and safety.
Michelle Tilley, Byrne Group’s Director For Health, Safety, Environment and HR, said: “As well as there being a significant and increasing number of hand injuries, the gloves were the bane of our workers’ lives.”
“Now our workers are happy, injuries have dramatically reduced and a robust business case has showed great cost benefits to Byrne”
Byrne Group has been using a selection of long-lasting, highly protective gloves from Globus that fit comfortably and securely, so encouraging worker co-operation. Michelle explained: “Globus developed a bespoke plan that ensured our workforce had the correct gloves in the right size for the tasks they were undertaking. They were trained onsite in weekly sessions in glove use and selection and understand how much better and longer lasting these gloves are.”
Globus also undertakes regular reviews to ensure sustainable improvement and to quickly resolve any new issues that may arise.
Michelle commented: “Globus has been tenacious in winning over our operatives to their gloves. Now our workers are happy, injuries have dramatically reduced and a robust business case has showed great cost benefits to Byrne.
Changing a culture is difficult, but now our guys will not give up their gloves – they take them home and wash them, rather than throw them away, and really appreciate the difference they make to their working day. Through working closely with our people, Globus delivered significant improvements.”
