Operators had been experiencing an increasing number of minor cuts to hands using a leather rigger glove and usage of these gloves was high. There was also a perception amongst wearers that the padded nature of the rigger glove off ered them the best possible protection against cuts. With an emphasis on keeping its operators safe and reversing the upward trend of hand injuries, the Health and Safety team at Uptonsteel approached the market for an alternative hand safety solution.
A hand protection expert from Globus was invited to work with the Health and Safety team at Uptonsteel to carry out a hand safety risk assessment. All hazards were examined and a recommendation report resulted.
From the assessment, one of the requirements was to enable sharp sheet metal to be handled safely and securely in both oily and dry conditions. A second requirement was to protect hands when carrying out non-steel handling activities.
In all cases the gloves would need to be comfortable to wear, durable and enable excellent dexterity.
“When it came to hand protection, it was important to provide our employees with the right product.”
Two gloves from the Globus glove portfolio were identified as being suitable for the hazards faced; the Showa Best Aegis HP54 with level 5 cut resistance (EN388) and the multi-purpose Showa Best 350R for general handling.
The Aegis HP54 glove represents the ideal combination of comfort, cut resistance and durability. The fit and feel of this glove rival thinner lighter-weight products but the 10 gauge construction adds more cut protection and durability. The high levels of grip are achieved thanks to the Zorb-IT® sponge nitrile palm coating and the HP54 is now the most widely-worn glove across all of the Uptonsteel sites because of its suitability for all steel handling tasks.
For other manual handling tasks, the flexible and robust 350R was deemed the perfect fit. From pallet-making to general yard and transportation tasks, the 350R protects and offers high levels of grip in all conditions. The breathable liner adds to the feeling of comfort and allows it to be worn for long periods of time.
Several benefits have been realised since the introduction of the new gloves:
- Over a period of twelve months, the hand accident rate has dropped significantly;
- The uncompromised fit and feel led to the operators entrusting the new gloves in no time at all;
- The Aegis HP54 glove is lasting up to six times longer than the previous rigger gloves and as a result less glove changing is occurring throughout the day which is impacting positively on productivity levels.
